Schubert had only one composition lesson with Sechter in 1828. He had gone for some advice on fugal technique, especially fugal answers, inspired by his work on his Fugue in E minor, D. 952. Sechter sent him off at the end of the lesson to write a fugue based on the musical letters of Schubert’s own name, but only nine days later he was dead. Sechter wrote his own fugue on the theme with brief prelude and postlude as a tribute.
